submitted by Hey redditors, I just had a few questions regarding the validity of moving forward with both my business, and what direction I should go next. My situation is somewhat unique.
About me:
I am a 20 year old College Freshman going to School for Electrical Engineering in Southern Illinois University, but I am from Michigan (There is a long story as to why I am going to SIU, Let's just say it's for personal reasons).
I happen to be very lucky and my parents are paying for my degree. All I have to do is get As and Bs my classes, and I can walk out of school with a bachelors degree in EE and no debt. I also have an internship at Rockwell Automation this summer.
My Dad is an investment manager and my Mom is works in Health Insurance and are both high-paid employees. Both of them want to see me Graduate college and get a nice engineering job at some large firm.
How the business started (you can skip this part unless you want to hear a story. Skip to "what the business, CircleTech LLC does"):
Since around 2012, I have been into PC hardware. Not really the gaming side, just computer hardware for some reason. I like that computers are like adult legos and can be fitted together and taken apart easily.
Around 2015, some of my friends wanted to build gaming PCs, and I offered to help them. In order to maximize the performance per dollar, I very often went with used computer parts. I would visit places like craigslist and Letgo and get really good deals on parts. Back then I was building $200-300 PCs that could easily play most games at 1080p. Way cheaper than anything pre-built.
Since I knew how to build cheap gaming PCs out of used parts, it means that I have carefully developed the skill of being able to look at a computer part and instantly approximate it's value. This is just due to the fact I know about almost every possible combination of computer parts from the Slot 1 days all the way to LGA 1151. I can easily spot specific motherboards, CPUs, RAM, and immediately tell if it has resale value. This will be important later.
January of 2016 I was home for winter break. I had a bunch of computer parts I wanted to get rid of. I learned there are small scrap yards and junk yards around Michigan that will pay you for computer parts. Not much, but better than zero.
when I got there, I threw what little I had on the scale. some SATA cables, power supplies, broken motherboards, ect and got $7 for the broken garbage. Then I noticed they were throwing everything in these gigantic boxes called pallet boxes. I looked inside, and found a gigabyte AM3 Motherboard. Attached to the board was a phenom ii X6 1055t + 16GB of DDR3. I had no idea if it would work, but I took the plunge and decided to ask to buy it.
It turned out nobody has ever asked to buy anything from this scrapyard before. They billed me BY WEIGHT!, $1 a pound. $5 for the whole thing.
I brought it back home, and plugged it into a power supply and added a geforce 8400 GS just to test it. Low and behold, the combination booted right up.
I then listed the thing on ebay, and the next day was sold for $115. I had made an $80 profit off of something that was junk.
"hey, this could work" I thought.
The next week I went back again. This time I found an HP machine with an LGA 1156 board and a first gen i7. I bought the whole computer for $10. The next week, I sold the machine for $150.
That summer, I made almost 22K in total sales and walked away with an after-tax profit of 10K. Not bad for a start I guess. I was working just by myself.
Fast forward to today, and I now have multiple scrap yards that I stop off at often to buy computers and parts from. I make a visit, comb through their pallets and bins of computer parts, and cherry pick the most resellable pieces. I also sometimes see entire machines at these places that have core i7's in them, Just thrown away by some company as scrap. I usually pay the scrap yards 2-3 times what they usually get by weight from their buyers.
Since I am in college now, when I come home I start selling computers again. I have made a few K here and there, but nothing major since I don't have time to dedicate my full time to the business.
On November of 2018, I decided to make this an official documented business. I filed my articles of formation with the state of Michigan as CircleTech LLC.
What the business, CircleTech LLC does:
Circletech LLC specializes in the refurbishing of e-waste in order to extract the most value from apparently "junk" electronics. I specialize in newer computers and parts (think sandy bridge and up) and very old computers and parts (think old-ass Dell Beige boxes from 1997 and 486 PCs). I sell many computers and parts from Motherboards, CPUs, RAM, high-end power supplies, laptops, and entire machines I find intact.
As of now, the business has been cash flow positive. However I need to move my inventory to a different location other than my parents basement (hey, I AM paying rent)!
Plan for the summer of 2019:
I will be starting the summer early may 2019. If you had read the intro, I currently have a job at Rockwell Automation as an intern for the summer. I also am making a plan to scale up the business during the summer as well.
This summer, I will be renting out a storage unit to work out of, and I will be paying someone I know very well to list and sell things on a purely commission basis. I will be spending my time growing the business, and they will get things listed, packed, and shipped on Ebay for me.
My goal for the summer is to find even more scrap yards to work with, and explore further avenues to provide value to my customers. I also want to start building a proper ecommerce website and try to move away from Ebay and paypal entirely to build my own brand. I also am going to contact some small computer stores around Michigan (yes, PC repair stores still exist in certain places) to see if I can sell them parts.
What now?
As of now, I am divided on what I should do next.
I am not sure if college is even right for me. I could start building a computer business today and possibly scale it up. I could also continue to get my free college degree and go on to be a high paid engineer at some large firm.
What would reddit suggest? Should I keep running my business on the side and get my degree? Or should I completely abandon my parents wishes of getting a job as am employee and focus entirely on my business? Remember for me, college is free (as long as I get good grades). That's why I am so divided.
TL:DR: I am a college student currently pursuing my electrical engineering degree and I am running a moderately successful business selling refurbished computer parts. My education is paid for by my parents so I will have no debt when I leave school. I could focus on my degree and run the business on the side or I could drop out of college and jump headfirst into my business. What should I do next?
submitted by The impact of ad positioning in search engine advertising:… three tests are statistically signifcant and support the efect of ad rank on the search engine advertising metrics. Welch’s F(7, 27,276.88)=527.77, p<.001 is for the relationship between ad rank and click through rate. For ad rank and cost per click, it is Welch’s F(7, 25,975.77)=605.64, p<.001. And for ad rank and conversion rate on the keyword level, the analysis yields Welch’s F(7, 27,113.38)=44.90, p<.001. The mean values for click-through rate, cost per click, and conversion rate are shown in Fig. 4. D. Schultz 1 3 The linear, quadratic, and cubic trends across search engine advertising ranks are also tested on the keyword level. Table 5 displays the corresponding results. Across the keyword level, the trend analysis for ad rank and click-through rate yield statistically signifcant linear, quadratic, and cubic results. The linear trend is most pronounced [t(16,121.47)=−50.74, p<.001, η2 partial=.011]. Based on Cohen’s categorization, the efect size can be classifed as small. Overall, click-through rate decreases with lower positioned advertisements supporting the earlier results and Hypothesis 1. The efect of ad rank on cost per click yields statistically signifcant linear, quadratic, and cubic trends. The inverse u-shaped quadratic trend explains the most variance [t(8167.44)=−42.34, p<.001, η2 partial=.010]. The highest paid price for a click is paid on average at rank 3 (see Fig. 4). Partial η2 is found to be small. In contrast to the linear decreasing trend on the campaign level, a quadratic trend is prevalent for the keyword data. This result is similar to Jansen et al. [33], who found the second rank to have the highest average cost per click potentially due to diferences in quality scores. Although the keyword level analysis does not support a monotone decrease of cost per click for lower positioned advertisements, cost per click decreases after rank 3. Thus, these results are in part in line with the fndings on the campaign level and Hypothesis 2. Regarding the question of rank proftability, it is important to note that diferences across the price dimension exist. The existence of non-linear price efects across advertisement ranking demonstrates the importance of considering this dimension in the decision problem. Advertisers further have to consider how this dimension develops, especially with regard to the quality dimension. For the relationship between ad rank and conversion rate, the linear trend across search engine advertising ranks is statistically signifcant [t(15,461.27)=−17.23, p<.001, η2 partial=.001]. However, partial η2 indicates no efect of advertising rank on conversion rate on the keyword level, thus lending no support to Hypothesis 3. Furthermore, the linear trend on the keyword level is negative whereas it is positive on the campaign level. 5.3 Synopsis of campaign and keyword level analysis Comparing the results from the campaign analysis and the keyword analysis, the frst analysis on campaign level shows that click-through rates and cost per click decrease as search engine advertisements are positioned lower on the search engine result pages, whereas conversion rates increase. Based on the keyword data, lower advertising positions lead to lesser click-through rates, cost per click, and conversion rates. So while keyword data confrms some earlier research results [24, 45], the overall evaluation of a search engine advertising campaign may difer in the sense of [3]. As such, advertisers are advised to base their decisions on a portfolio of keywords rather than on individual keywords. In general, search engine advertising campaigns are in part optimized by deleting and adding single keywords. The selection process is based on the performance of single keywords. However, the overlap between keywords is rarely considered 1 3 The impact of ad positioning in search engine advertising:… because it is not easily assessable. Consequently, the overlap and thus its performance share is transferred to other keywords, creating a process of continuous approximation. The process may, however, be improved when the selection process considers a set of keywords that are closely related to each other. 6 Conclusion 6.1 Discussion and implications The study provides insights into the rank proftability in search engine advertising. The prevalent strategy of advertisers to bid for the topmost position [9] has been shown to be an over-simplifcation of search engine advertising. Advertisers face a decision problem that includes a quantity, price, and quality dimension. As shown, an increase in advertising ranking leads to a higher click probability, a potential increase in cost per click, and a non-monotonically decreasing conversion probability. Advertisers thus face a trade-of between number of prospects, their acquisition cost, and the quality of the prospects. For the service company, ad rank 3 averaged the highest overall revenue after advertising and considerably outperformed ad rank 2 and all lower positions (Table 2). In the short term, advertisers may increase revenue by carefully aiming for the most proftable ad rank. However, if all advertisers follow the same approach, the strategy will not provide an equilibrium in the long term. Altogether, search engine advertising is a system of non-linear rank proftability and a multi-faceted decision problem. Consequently, advertisers are advised to consider all revenue related behaviors and measures. This non-monotone efect of ad positioning on the outcome of search engine advertising originates in the diferent search behavior, thereby creating diferent levels of involvement. Whereas low involvement results in the inspection of few search engine advertisements, high involvement, in contrast, leads to a high propensity to click and review multiple advertisements on the search engine results page. Thus, diferent advertising ranks reach diferently structured target groups. In consequence, the diferences in search efort based on varying degrees of activation and involvement result in non-monotone probabilities to click an advertisement and conduct a transaction. In line with previous results [3, 24], this study confrms that cost drops at a faster rate than revenue in search engine advertising. Additionally, this study adds to the diferent results regarding the relationship between advertising rank and the quality of consumer trafc. Although due to experimental restrictions (budget constraints and competition), the data set does not include information on rank 1, which might have outperformed the results presented (for example, the frst position generated about 80% of the total profts for a national retail chain [33]), the sample data demonstrates a non-linear shape for the quality dimension. It is important to note that this non-monotone relationship also holds true for any potential results at rank 1. The results of the campaign data thus indicate that the conversion probability and thus the quality of the trafc are non-linear. Thus, the present study demonstrates the importance of considering all three dimensions when deciding on the optimal rank C. D. Schultz 1 3 in search engine advertising. It thereby shows that higher ad ranks do not always lead to higher revenues. In consequence, this fnding challenges the predominant assumption of a monotone rank proftability. Additionally, the adjustment of some search engines to display advertisements only above or below the organic results has increased advertisers’ attention towards positioning in search engine advertising. Thus, the fnding of a multifaceted decision problem is even more important now. Furthermore, the analyses revealed that diferences exist based on the level of analysis. Campaign and keyword level difered in regard to the quality of consumer trafc. This fnding sheds some light to the diferent results in previous studies [3, 24, 45, 61], thus answering the call for more research on rank proftability [32] and adding to our understanding of the impact of ad positioning in search engine advertising. The diference may potentially be attributed to the overlap of keywords in the search topic. Consequently, the level of analysis and all dimensions of the decision problem need to be taken into account because the prevalent strategy to attain high ad rankings may not always maximize sales. Search engine advertisers in turn need to carefully determine their advertising strategy. A heuristic such as ranking at the top may not maximize the overall return. One primary way for advertisers to infuence the advertising rank is to adjust the bid price. This may consequently be another reason for strategic bidding behavior (e.g., [23, 74]). As mentioned above, the study also identifes diferences across diferent data levels. Managers should therefore not only consider multiple objectives, but also multiple perspectives, such as diferentiating between keyword and keyword portfolio (campaign) level. Our understanding of overlapping keywords and their efects is still limited and needs to be addressed further. The results further implicate that clicks may not always be a sufcient substitute for revenues when evaluating the performance of search engine advertising [54]. Therefore, researchers need to be aware of this decision problem. Especially when studying search engine advertising from the perspective of advertisers, researchers need to consider varying characteristics of prospects, such as degree of interest and activity, which may lead to diferent behavior, such as click and conversion probability. 6.2 Limitations and future research The non-monotone rank proftability challenges advertisers with a three-dimensional decision problem in search engine advertising. Future research should bear in mind the limitations of the present study. The study draws on data from a service company for which the majority of the target group is characterized by high involvement. The fndings thus relates to comparable companies predominantly ofering experience and trust goods. Further research may address the question whether the multi-faceted decision problem is similarly pronounced for classical retail companies selling search goods. 1 3 The impact of ad positioning in search engine advertising:… In addition to the bid amount, the auction mechanisms for search engine generally include additional quality criteria, such as an advertisement’s past click-through rate and the relevance of the targeted page [9, 47, 49]. For the 3 year period, no data on such quality criteria were available. Search engines such as Google, for example, now provide a useable proxy in their quality score [3, 45]. Also, no data on external factors such as price competition was available. Even though this is in line with the perspective of an advertiser adapted in this study, competition may infuence the rank proftability [8, 72]. Furthermore, competition may difer across keyword level. However, the service company is positioned in a highly competitive market, so that competition was constantly high for the search engine advertising campaign used in this study. With no competitive information accessible, the click-through rate is considered a function of advertising position only. Thus, we were unable to identify the proportion of the click-through rate that is due to its relevance in comparison to competing advertisements [as suggested by 10, 26, 28, 43]. Future research may extent on these limitations to include competitive information and analyze the infuence of competition on rank proftability. Although the data in the present study is representative for the data available to advertisers, the data set does not include information on potential efects from organic results [4, 73]. Organic results are the search results of the search engines’ proprietary relevance algorithms. Efects from organic results on search advertisements may further infuence the decision problem studied. Advertisement creatives may also have afected consumer behavior. Animesh et al. [7] fnd that price-focused ad design (emphasizing price aspects in the ad creative) performs better than quality-focused design (emphasizing quality aspects in the ad creative) at lower ranks. Future research may extend in those directions. Performance data generally only provides information if an advertisement is clicked, so that advertisers have no information whether the click was the last click during a search process. This notion of the last click, introduced by Chan and Park [12], could provide additional information on the performance of search engine advertising. Thus, further research may include this aspect to provide a more complete picture of the potential value of search engine advertising.
